The Green House Project

The Damone Group, LLC, in partnership with Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, is proud to be constructing Michigan's FIRST Green House project!

Philosophy and Vision

  • A home for seniors built to a residential scale and housing just ten seniors.

  • Inverts the priorities of a traditional institutional nursing home, in which the delivery of medical care or nursing is the primary determinant of architecture, activities and atmosphere.

  • The home part of nursing home is emphasized, and primacy is given to the elder’s quality of life, respect and responsibility.

  • A Green House offers its residents: care and security, freedom and spontaneity, privacy and companionship, as well as many of the other qualities that make life worth living.

  • As a leader in senior care throughout the state, PVM has committed itself to helping others develop, refine and publicize this most promising new approach to caring for the frail senior community.

  • It is founded on the idea that the physical and social environments in which we deliver long-term care can and should be "warm," "smart," and "green."
    • "Warm" - necessary social climate and the size
    • "Smart" - makes uses of the latest technology
    • "Green" - refers to essential connections to the living world

To deliver:

  • Excellent quality of life
  • Safe and effective clinical care
  • Improved job satisfaction for staff

Description

The Two Green Houses, constructed at the North East section of the PVM’s Village of Redford campus, are new, innovative homes for the frailest of seniors who previously would have been in a traditional nursing home model. Each Green Houses houses 10 seniors, featuring:

Approximately 7,000 SF of living space (per building) with an attached, oversized two car garage. A one story, wood frame, residential like structure with brick and siding exteriors, including the latest energy technology to be operated in a residence under a state nursing home license. The building also features a back-up generator to insure operability at all times. Both buildings have private patios with gardens.

Ten private rooms (per building) that may be decorated and furnished by the resident. Each room has a private bath. The house includes a large living room with a fireplace and an open kitchen and dining room where residents can see and smell what they will be eating each day.

Elders make their own decisions for wake-up, bedtimes and meal times. They may use the kitchen to prepare snacks for themselves or guests.

The Shahbaz, or elder assistant, is the direct care provider who prepares meals, washes clothes and assists all residents. The Shabaz is a Certified Nursing Assistant with advanced training who works with a self-managed team. They are coached by a guide – usually an administrator, and advised by a "sage" – a Green House resident.

Elders are visited by doctors and nurses who provide skilled nursing and therapy as needed.

The services are possible because the increase in cost for direct care workers with advanced training is offset by a reduction in the costs related to operating a large institution.
